Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Rhinoplasty
What is a rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty, or nose job, is a surgical procedure performed to improve the overall size, shape, and appearance of the nose while at the same time maintaining its primary function, breathing. During a rhinoplasty, the nose can be refined by reducing a prominent hump, narrowing a wide nasal bridge, correcting a crooked nasal bridge, reshaping or lifting the tip of the nose, correcting breathing issues and/or shortening a long nose. A rhinoplasty can sometimes be combined with a septoplasty to correct a deviated septum to improve nasal breathing.
Who is a candidate for a rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a “nose job,” is a cosmetic surgical procedure that can improve the appearance and function of the nose. A good candidate for rhinoplasty is someone who is unhappy with the size or shape of their nose and desires a more aesthetically pleasing or proportional appearance. Additionally, individuals with breathing difficulties or other nasal issues may benefit from a functional rhinoplasty to improve their breathing. It is important for candidates to have realistic expectations and be in good overall health, both physically and mentally. Ultimately, the decision to undergo rhinoplasty should be made after careful consideration and consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon.
What is a non-surgical rhinoplasty (aka liquid rhinoplasty)?
A non-surgical rhinoplasty, also known as a liquid or injectable rhinoplasty, is a non-invasive alternative to traditional surgical rhinoplasty. This procedure involves the use of injectable fillers, such as hyaluronic acid, to reshape and contour the nose. The fillers are strategically injected to add volume and improve the symmetry and shape of the nose. Non-surgical rhinoplasty is a quick procedure that can be performed in the office setting, typically with minimal downtime and discomfort. However, it is important to note that the results are temporary and typically last 6-18 months, depending on the type of filler used. Non-surgical rhinoplasty is a good option for individuals who want to improve the appearance of their nose without undergoing surgery, or for those who want to “test-drive” a new nose before committing to a permanent surgical solution. It is important to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon to determine if non-surgical rhinoplasty is the best option for your desired results.

At your pre-op appointment, Dr. Dunn will review your customized surgical plan with you and answer any additional questions you may have. You will be provided with a list of pre-op and post-op instructions to help you prepare you for your upcoming surgery. How does a rhinoplasty work?
A rhinoplasty typically takes 2 to 4 hours and is typically performed while under general anesthesia or deep sedation. Depending on the severity and complexity of your nose, Dr. Dunn will either perform and open or closed rhinoplasty. A closed rhinoplasty, or “incisionless rhinoplasty”, is typically for nasal surgery focused on improving breathing such as a septal deviation or nasal airway collapse. For all other cases, Dr. Dunn performs an open rhinoplasty through a small incision made between the nostrils to improve visualization and gain access to the underlying framework of the nose. Some people may have concern about the scar from an open rhinoplasty approach, but the incision is extremely well-hidden and fades away to almost nothing in six to eight weeks.

Most individuals take about seven to ten days off of work or school after a rhinoplasty. To minimize the chance of poor healing or injury during the early recovery process, Dr. Dunn’s limits strenuous physical activity up to four to six weeks. Typically 80 to 90% of swelling of the nose has resolved by 2-3 months, while the last 10 to 20% of swelling takes 9 to 18 months to fully resolve. The final result is typically seen at about 1 to 1 ½ years.
How long will my rhinoplasty result last?
After your nose has completed the healing process, rhinoplasty results last a lifetime. The only changes you’ll experience are due to the natural process of aging.
